UX/UI Case Study — Web Design Core Candle

Web Design project for the client who started a small business with name “core candles” making handmade candles with a variety of designs and adding a personalized touch.


The recent years are turned upside down for everyone. Many of person loses their job, yet they had time to know their skills and interest. Small business economy making bloom in last two year. even if the business is small but they need to find their identity over the globe. The following design is presented to one of the small business owners, who is crafting the candle with natural ingredients and refined process.

As the candle is essential to the home item not only for decor purposes but as a need also. Even if you have thousands of light blub decorated on the home, your birthday cannot be completed without blowing on the cake. in recent years the commercial industry of candle customers has seen a sharp increase in places like spas, event halls, restaurants, motels, and meditation centers using candles to make the aromatic environment for the best customer experience.

Normally such candles cab be found in any market store at a cheap price but if you want personal and some aesthetic touch in scents and lights then customers obviously move towards handmade candles. In the last two years, candle manufacturing is one of the top small business ideas people have adopted for second earing. in such tough competition, you need to stay ahead and grab your customers and also provide them with what no one expected.

As the biggest promise made by each hand-crafted candle manufacturer Core Candle Pvt Ltd also shares legacy and craftsmanship for their product. Yet, the startup itself is one step ahead of all other competitors, you can add your personal name and personal touch to your product if you want to do it.

And this is done with a very simple step as follows.

  1. Select your product.
  2. Add product to the cart.
  3. Select the event for which you are making a purchase.
  4. Add the name of the receiver.
  5. Select a scent you love.
  6. Add a personalized note to the candle.

This is the customization of the candles makes the startup more unique and stands out from other competitors.

About Startup,

Core Candles Pvt Ltd from Bangalore is started by a husband and wife duo to make their quarantine day more interesting and productive. You easily find them on Instagram with the user name @core.candle.by.verman. The main ingredient for their candle is soy wax which is good for us. In the meantime, they have created 7 prominent product categories all name after the scent of flowers. These are Rose, lavender, Lilac, Gardenia, Chamomile, Jasmine, Calendula.

The Product Manager and I decided to follow the double diamond process for UI/UX Design Procedure.


With the start of this project and as part of the research process. First, we decided to go local handmade candle manufacturer for competitive analysis. After the second talk, the client handed me a list of 23 web portal addresses and draws our attention towards a particular element they want to see in our design. But you can go further, it is important to note that alongside user persona satisfaction we need to also fulfill the requirements and the demands of the client itself ( Core candles). And the brief requirements of the clients are enlisted below.

Alas, the customers or user persona is another issue decided to list down before we go further. As a UX designer, I went for some ground research and drafted three user persona for the client.

  1. Primary User Persona — Individual Candle Purchaser
  2. Secondary User Persona — Event Planner or Event Organizer
  3. Tertiary User Persona — Store Owner or Store Manager

After primary research and competitive analysis, we defined our project agenda over the following use cases. The answer to a particular question helps us to draw the user flow for our design and business strategy

Our main agenda is to design a fully responsive Multi-page website with easy user onboarding and a simple buying experience. So let’s get some questions and answers.

  • How do customers normally reach the web front?

a) From social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, Telegram, YouTube, Snapchat, Pinterest, Tumblr, TikTok, and others, b) From Big E-commerce platforms like Amazon, Flipkart, eBay, Snapdeal, Myntra, IndiaMART, Nykaa, Ajio, Ikea, and others, c) From Offline Advertisement.

  • What type of customers often visit the web front?

a) Individual Customers, b) Store Manager, c)Event Coordinator, d) Event Planner, e) Wellness Center, f) Business Owner g) Art Collector, and others

  • How do customers interact with products?

They visit the page, check the testimonials for quality assurance, check social media platforms for social trust and online community help, check the photos for quality and assurance, check ingredients for scent, check order quantity as per their requirement.

  • What products do they want?

Something special for their special events

  • How we can add personalized touch?

Make easy customization of the scent, candle size, quantity, decoration, and personal message.

  • What if they want to place bulk orders?

Yes, we will provide them with easy steps to provide bulk orders.

  • Does the buying process is simplified?

Yes, log in with only mobile, and delivery address at the time of the payment.

Color Scheme

Based on the user persona behavior and the requirements of the clients for the web, we decided on the following color for the web design.

For typeface selection, we want a select typeface that should express the class, and modern touch with ease to read. Also, we need to be sure that they were particularly available with easy access throughout the online web.

The client insisted to use typefaces that are free to access and particularly from google font families. So first we selected the “Inter” font family as Font.

Based on the user persona behavior and the mood board. We decided to go with Outline Stroked Icon selection and to add the personal touch of the web and brand guidelines we added blob for every icon making them more promising.

The Upcoming

The project had been a great opportunity for me. Covid-19 and time after that gained momentum towards side hustle and small business.

Yet like every other business, the candle-making business is also facing some of the basic challenges that need to address. User research and user study are carried out under the client brief ideas and concepts. so the result might be different. Designing for user persona is expected but considering the client’s requirements also needs to be addressed in this project.

The client has yet not purchased the domain and hosting services for the small business, and I sincerely hope that they will do it soon.

After completion of this project, the further project is to build a web app where the client can manage their inventory. He should be able to manage the stock and supplement to the multiple physical stores also to the different online platforms, like Amazon, Flipkart, Ajio, Myntra, and all others.
